HMW Enterprises Inc.: The Company

HMW has its headquarters in Waynesboro, PA - an easy drive from Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD.

The company was founded in 1965 to produce basic controls for AMP, Inc. (now Tyco) terminal applicators, and continued to grow with the computer industry. In 1974, HMW was contracted to design and manufacture some of the first advanced IBM terminals for medical applications. These enhanced Model 3275 terminals, developed with TTL - State-of-the-Art at the time - included CRT, light pen, badge reader, printer and other capabilities. The units were converted to microprocessor technology later on.

Industrial applications followed. In the early '80's, as computer-based automation ventured onto the plant floor, industry demanded a robust HMI®. HMW met the challenge with some of the first rugged HMI® solutions. In 1984 the HMW Model 9204 was the first computer unit ever to be certified by Factory Mutual Research (FMR) for Classes I and II, Divs. 1 and 2 operation and patented that same year.

Adapting to ever-changing technology, HMW terminals, workstations and computers are found on oil drill platforms, petrochemical plants, in many process control applications such as food and beverage plants, steel and heavy industry, transportation, etc.

In 1991 the U.S. Patent Office granted the trademark for HMI (Human Machine Interface) to HMW, which it continues to maintain and defend.

Parallel and synergistically to our 30 years of experience in industrial and specialty computer technology, HMW manufactures and services a complete line of control systems for machine tools used primarily in the automotive industry. In 1988 HMW acquired the technology and the entire motion control system integration department from Landis Tool, then a division of Litton Industrial Automation. This acquisition put HMW in the niche market of high-resolution control applications - largely utilized in the automotive industry for controlling cam and crankshaft grinders - but adaptable for any high precision machine tools, providing micron range accuracy. HMW provides both systems and service internationally.

A recent addition to HMW's range of computer-based solutions is the Brewsonic™ real-time, non-invasive data/control system for the brewing and wine industries. The system is based on ultrasonic liquid density measurement technology and accurately determines progression of the fermentation process.

The wide range of experience in the industrial computer and factory floor automation field reflects our slogan -

If you can define it, we can design it!
